We spend a lot of time chasing peace. We hope it will come when the schedule finally slows down, or when the worries quiet just enough for us to breathe. Still even in the calmest moments, something inside us still feels unsettled. The truth is, we are often restless because we are looking for peace in places that cannot give it.
Simeon teaches us something different. He waited his whole life for God to keep a promise. He did not receive comfort, control, or certainty about the future. What he received was a Child. And that was enough. Holding Jesus, Simeon could say he was ready to depart in peace, but because God had kept His Word.
We try to manage our fears, fix our failures, and earn our calm. We imagine peace will come once we do better or try harder. That kind of peace never lasts. The Gospel meets us at the manger. God does not ask us to climb up to peace. He comes down to us. In Jesus, the Prince of Peace, God places peace into human hands, hands like Simeon’s, and hands like ours. Christ is our peace, given freely, before we have done anything deserving Him.
In worship and at the Lord’s Table, that same Jesus comes to us again, not as an idea, but as an individual. Real peace is not found by chasing it. Real peace is found by in Jesus.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, Prince of Peace, quiet our restless hearts. Teach us to trust Your promises and to receive the peace You freely give. Amen.
Thought for the Day:
Peace does not come from having everything under control. It comes from knowing Christ is controlling everything.
