Grace to you and peace in Jesus’ name. Amen.
Introduction — Where We Left Off
O
n Sunday we began searching for the Missing Piece, the peace only Jesus gives. We looked at the grit of faith needed in a season when hearts can grow weary. Today we turn to another calling woven deeply into Christian men: the call to keep watch.
I don’t mean to leave you ladies out, but guys, we’re wired a little differently. The world, our homes, our churches, and our hearts need watchmen. God has wired men purposefully for just that task. Not with chest‑pounding over-pride, but with the quiet resilient courage of those who stand watch. The warrior‑spirit in a Christian man is not aggression, it is conviction. It is the willingness to remain faithful when life’s storms roll in.
Law — The Drowsy Danger
S
leep comes easily to the culture we live in. We have so many comforts. Comforts that can become distractions which numb the senses. Work schedules, school calendars, and glowing screens whisper empty promises of control and completion. Like the disciples in Gethsemane, we doze while our Savior prays.1 We guard our barns and hobbies better than our hearts and souls.
Gospel — The Faithful Watchman
Peace and stability do not depend on your stamina. The Bible tells us:
H
e who keeps Israel [His people]
will neither slumber nor sleep.2
Your peace rests in the One who stays awake. Jesus stood His post when no one else could. He faced the adversary head‑on in the wilderness,3 and remained stalwart in Gethsemane. He is the true Watchman who never leaves His post or His people unguarded. That warrior‑strength of Jesus is not bluster, it is obedience.
When the devil tempted Him, Jesus drew the sword of the Spirit, the Word of God.4 It is the warrior-Jesus we should look to as our hero, our example, and our strength. That is the Jesus that calls you to arm yourselves for battle dressed in the weapons of heaven.
What are we fighting for? As a watchman over your house, over this church, and this community you are defending the peace we give to our families. Our goal should be to ensure not one of them ever feels unsafe among us. With Jesus as our example we protect, intercede, and stand guard over them. Following Jesus who protected and saved with His own blood.5
Awaken — Faith Begins with Awareness
W
e came into this season looking at the End Times.6 The Bible says:
The night is nearly over; the day is almost here.7
Those words are meant to keep you awake. Awakening is more than opening your eyes. It is letting God’s Word shake the frost from your soul. The Spirit uses the Word to lift your heart into faith.8 Being in God’s Word will give you the strength to stand.
Alert — Standing Guard in Faith
B
eing alert, being watchful is not anxiety or paranoia. It’s not looking for problems around ever corner. It is purposeful. God gives His Church pastors and preachers so the Gospel may be proclaimed and faith sustained.9 The Small Catechism reminds us these things should be brought into the home by the “head of the house.10”
In your vocation, in the place God has equipped you and placed you, God has also given you something to protect: your wife, your children, your church-family, your neighbors, your community. He calls us to defend the vulnerable and stay steady when fear rattles the doors. Christian men should guard not only physically, but emotionally, financially, and spiritually. We should lead our house and our church in these things. A Godly-man also keeps his family close to Word and Sacrament where they are fed what is healthy.
A distracted warrior is dangerous to those around him. In a battle everyone needs to be focused on the enemy’s attack. Your heart needs guarding. Your mind needs discipline. Your home needs leadership. Your Church needs your witnesses, presence, and provision. God has wired into you something unique. Something that calls you to such things, but something no one can do alone.
Assurance — The Prince of Peace Watches with Us
Y
ou do not keep watch alone. Jesus promises to be present, but we should not be walking with Him alone. We should be a band of brothers united in the cause of Christ. The promise of Christ’s presence will strengthens weary hearts11 even when nights stretch long. Together we remind each other, “You are not forgotten. The dawn is coming.” David was a man of God and a mighty warrior, but the Bible says:
Day by day men came to David to help him, until there was a great army, like an army of God.12
He didn’t walk alone with God, neither should we.
Conclusion — Holding the Line
So gentlemen, hold your post. Guard your homes and hearts, and the church that feeds your family. The Bible assures us those who remain watchful will rejoice when Jesus returns in glory.13 Every quiet prayer whispered in the dark, every act of unseen faithfulness, every moment you refuse to surrender to sin, your Savior sees it. That faith, given to you, is counted as honor before God.14
Cliffhanger
N
ext week Wednesday the Warrior’s cry rises from the wilderness, and the Champion who kept watch begins His advance. Jesus once declared, “Even the gates of Hell will l against My Church.15” Gates do not charge. Gates do not move. Hell builds gates to keep prisoners in and hold faithful defenders out.
The Church does not cower even before Hell’s gates. We are called to attack them. Armed with the weapons of faith,16 we strike where darkness fortifies itself. Where Hell builds gates, Jesus’ warriors break them down. Next week we begin the march with the Warrior‑Christ who leads us.
Amen.

As We Gather
Today we reflect on the calling God gives His people to keep watch—not in fear, but in faith. Christ, our Warrior‑Watchman, guards His Church and equips us with His Word so we may stand firm, protect our homes, strengthen our brothers and sisters, and live with courage as we wait for His return. His peace restores what is missing and steadies the heart for the battles of every day.
Prayer Before Service
O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare Your praise. Make my heart ready, O God, to hear Your Word, to trust Your promises, and to walk in Your ways, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
History:
This brief prayer is rooted in the ancient monastic hours, especially the Matins opening versicle from Psalm 51:15. Christians for centuries have begun worship with this plea for God to prepare the heart and open the lips for faithful praise.
