06-15-2025 – John 8:48–59 – The Harvest of the Triune God
June 15, 2025
Introduction
In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, our Triune God. Amen.
Welcome to Trinity Sunday, where we celebrate the God who is three-in-one. The fields around us are getting ready for harvest. It’s a joyful sight, and it’s where we are today in our “Glimpses of Grace in the Grain” series, our final sermon, celebrating the harvest of the Triune God.
We’ve sown seeds, waited patiently, tended the soil, faced weeds, been watered by the Spirit, seen the first sprouts, felt the Spirit’s wind and now, we arrive at the culmination: the gathering of the harvest, blessed by the Father, Son, and Spirit.
The sun is warm, the fields are growing. If you’ve been following along in our Bible reading plan, you read 1 Kings 17 this week: Elijah at the brook, receiving God’s supply. Just like that, today is about supply. Picture a farmer standing in his field, surrounded by a community, harvesting corn under a bright sky. That’s the image for Trinity Sunday: the Triune God gathering us into His eternal harvest, united in community.
Let’s walk into this field together, guided by the Son, empowered by the Spirit, and sustained by the wisdom of the Father.
The Son’s Eternal Harvest
We begin with John 8. Jesus is in a heated debate with the religious leaders. When He declares, “Before Abraham was, I Am,” He invokes the Divine name.1 This isn’t imagination, metaphor, simile or story. This is revelation. He is claiming His place as the one true holy eternal living God.
Here is the Son, revealing His role in the Triune harvest. He secures our place through His death and resurrection. Jesus gathers us with the same intent as Fall harvest in fields around us. On Trinity Sunday, we remember Jesus is not just a teacher or prophet. He is the eternal “I AM,” gathering sinners into God’s harvest. The question I have for you is: Have you paused lately to think about who you are already part of that harvest? You are not overlooked. You are not unclaimed. You are His.2
Because He is the eternal Son, we have a place not just today but for all eternity. Your place in the harvest is secured by the One who always was “before Abraham,” who is right now, and will always be beside you.
The Spirit Proclaims the Harvest
From the Son’s gathering work, we move to the Spirit’s proclamation. In Acts 2 Peter preaches on Pentecost.3 He declares Jesus is crucified, raised, and exalted, and that the Holy Spirit now rests on all believers.
This is the Spirit’s role in the Triune mission: He proclaims the truth and draws people into God’s family calling all souls and hearts to Jesus. The Spirit still works through and in you. Maybe someone in your life is still out in the field, among the weeds and rocks, waiting for an invitation. Maybe this week, you’ll be the one to extend that invitation to join us here.
Think about who God might be putting on your heart. A friend. A coworker. A family member. They may not be ready to walk into a church, but they might be ready for a coffee, a conversation, or a quiet word of encouragement.
The Father’s Wisdom Ordains the Harvest
The Father’s role: is planning the harvest before from the foundation of the world.4 Nothing in His field is random. In the same way, God’s plan for your salvation is no accident. The Father ordains it, the Son accomplishes it, and the Holy Spirit proclaims it.
A field doesn’t grow on its own. Feral plants are usually not helpful. It takes a farmer’s vision, planning and care. So it is with your life in Jesus. You are the result of Divine design and eternal love.
Scattered Meets Gathered
We don’t always feel gathered, do we? Sin scatters us. Pride, fear, distractions, they pull us away. I’ve missed opportunities to help a neighbor because I was too absorbed in my own plans. Maybe you’ve felt scattered at times too.
God’s Law shows us where we’ve fallen down, or tried to stray away. That’s the sting of the Law. It reminds us we don’t always live as harvest people. We leave rows untended and let weeds grow in our relationships. We stray away from God’s care. But the Gospel? The Gospel is the warm sun of Summer. Jesus, the “I AM,” is gathering you. You are not a lost kernel on the ground. You are not left withered and warn. You are part of the harvest. You are cared for. You are known. You are wanted. It doesn’t matter who you are or where you’ve been.
On this Trinity Sunday, hear this clearly: The Triune God gathers the scattered. He unites the divided. He draws the outsider in. And He uses even weak and weary hands like ours to do it.Conclusion
This brings us to the final row of the field, and the last message in our “Glimpses of Grace in the the Grain.” We began with seeds, waited through trials, and now we rejoice in the harvest.
As you live your life the Triune God is still harvesting. He’s calling others through you. There is a world out there that needs to know this: The Father sees them, the Son died for them, the Spirit is calling them. Will you be part of that work? Will you share the peace we have with those who still need it?
Let’s pray: Dear God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, thank You for gathering us. Help us to live as Your harvest people, with joy, faith, and love, for You and our neighbor. Amen.
