01/26/2025 – John 1:43–51 – The Light Revealed: Called to Follow
January 26, 2025
Grace and peace to you in Jesus’ name. Amen.
Have you ever received an invitation that changed your life? Maybe it was as simple as a neighbor asking for help, and in doing so, you forged a lifelong friendship. Invitations have power. They can redirect our paths in ways we never imagined.
Jesus’ call to Philip is like that. With the words, “Follow me,1” Jesus offers not just a direction but a relationship. It’s a call that changes everything. To be called by a rabbi in Jesus’ time was a profound honor. It meant the rabbi believed you had the ability to learn, grow, and carry on his teachings. The saying, “May the dust of your rabbi cover you,” reflects the privilege and closeness of following a teacher so closely that you are covered in the dust they kick up from their feet as they walk.
This, however, was no ordinary rabbi. This was Jesus, the Son of God. The weight and wonder of His invitation in the words, “Follow me” are unmatched. It is not just an honor, it is a calling to walk in the light of the Messiah Himself.
John’s Gospel tells us Jesus found Philip and said, “Follow me.” Notice, Philip wasn’t searching for Jesus, Jesus found him. Our discipleship, our following Jesus begins not with our pursuit of Jesus but His pursuit of us.
Philip’s immediate response was to find Nathanael and share the news:
We have found Him of whom Moses in the Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth.2
Nathanael’s skeptically asks, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?3”
Faith often starts small, but when nurtured by encounters with Jesus, it grows. For Philip and Nathanael, following Jesus meant stepping into a lot of unknown, trusting He was the promised Messiah. For us following Jesus means seeking Him daily in Scripture and prayer. It’s living with the assurance He calls us by name4 and leads us on paths of grace, peace and truth.
When Nathanael meets Jesus, he experiences a moment of revelation. Jesus declares, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit!.” Nathanael is astonished: “How do you know me?5”
Jesus’ response reveals His divine knowledge, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” This moment changes everything for Nathanael. He proclaims, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!”
Christ’s light transforms doubt into faith, and skepticism into conviction. When we encounter Jesus, we see ourselves more clearly. Not just our sins more clearly, but also our identity as beloved children of God. His light exposes the darkness in our lives but also leads us to forgiveness and renewal.
Following Jesus isn’t a one-time decision. It’s a daily journey. Like a farmer tending fields, discipleship requires consistent care and attention. Each day brings opportunities to live out our faith: forgiving a neighbor, showing kindness to a stranger, or standing firm in truth when it’s easier to stay silent.
Jesus’ words to Nathanael offer a promise, “You will see greater things than these.6” This is a reminder that our journey with Jesus is one of growth and discovery. As we follow Him, we experience His presence in ways that deepen our faith and broaden our understanding of His grace.
How can you reflect Christ’s light in your daily life. It could be something simple, like checking in on a lonely neighbor or praying for someone in need. These small acts are like lanterns lighting the path for others to see Jesus through you.
Jesus’ call to “Follow me” is as relevant today as it was for Philip and Nathanael. It’s an invitation to step out of darkness and into His marvelous light.7 This week, reflect on how you will respond to His call. Will you follow Him more closely, trust Him more deeply, and share His love more freely?
Next week, we’ll climb the mountain to witness the glory of Christ in the Transfiguration. Until then, let’s walk in His light and live as His disciples.
Amen.
